Collage as a way of seeing systems.

I am a collage illustrator working in editorial illustration, visual essays and image-based commentary and critique.

My work is about the systems that shape everyday life. Interfaces, dark patterns, bureaucratic rituals, automation, extractive platforms and the algorithms that govern what we see and how we act.

I am interested in collage as a contemporary visual language, not just a nostalgic one. Rather than relying on the familiar visual world of torn newspapers, old prints and analogue fragments, I use the visual material of the digital era: UI kits, buttons, forms, browser windows, system messages, glitches and the moments where the logic beneath a slick interface reveals itself.

My recent work looks at the burdens placed on people by systems that are designed to appear neutral. A government website that makes failure more likely. A labour platform that reduces workers to data. A decision-making process that outsources corporate responsibility to automation.

This work is my response to a wider body of thinking about power, technology and everyday life. Mark Fisher’s writing on bureaucracy and audit culture, Byung-Chul Han’s account of self-exploitation, John Gray’s scepticism about progress, Yanis Varoufakis’s framing of platforms as digital fiefdoms, and Cory Doctorow’s critique of monopoly power all sit somewhere behind these pieces, even where no single image maps directly onto a single idea.

I use small, human figures, flat space and fragments of interfaces to examine the true intent of systems that claim to be neutral.

I am also developing a new body of work about AI embedded in systems we can no longer fully see or understand. This spans automated administration, military targeting and other forms of machine judgement.

I also build small code-based tools of my own to generate and manipulate collage material, extending the same digital vocabulary into process as well as content.

Outside of my editorial illustration practice, I also work as a designer at mindfizz, helping clients, including international NGOs, foundation-funded charities and government departments, structure presentations, reports and visual resources. I bring my fascination with systems to this work, translating complex ideas into clear visual communication.
